Long before founding Thayer Financial, Deaton learned the meaning of service, accountability, and disciplined execution as a cadet at West Point and an Army officer deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF). Those formative experiences instilled a standard of conduct that carries directly into his work as an advisor: when clients entrust you with their livelihood and legacy, half-measures and self-interest have no place.
As a comprehensive wealth strategist holding the CFP®, ChFC®, WMCP®, and AEP® designations, Deaton brings advanced technical rigor to every client relationship; integrating investment management, estate planning, and tax strategy into a cohesive, enduring roadmap. Rather than offering one-size-fits-all financial advice, he serves as an objective sounding board and guide for clients navigating their complex financial decisions
Outside the office, Deaton is dedicated to his family and community. He believes that genuine wealth isn’t just about numbers on a balance sheet; it’s about the freedom, confidence, and peace of mind to lead a meaningful life on your own terms.

Kelly Smith, a Clemson University graduate with a degree in Finance, joined me at Thayer Financial in January 2020 as co-owner and Chief Compliance Officer. She brings a wealth of knowledge to the business after working for several large Charlotte-based wealth management companies. She also spent several years working in her family’s business, The Jewelry Exchange, where she became a Graduate Gemologist.
Her background has focused on creating operational efficiencies for startups and existing financial firms. After spending years learning how the “big box” firms approached financial management, for instance, by pushing proprietary products, selling expensive life insurance, and positioning higher commission investments, she is a huge advocate for the fee-only financial planning approach and changing the paradigm for how people receive their financial advice.
As the daughter of a small business owner, Kelly understands the complexities and challenges of running a small business. Kelly focuses on the business’s operational side and our commitment to delivering an exceptional client experience.
