Thayer Financial is a Fee-Only Financial Advisor

Life moves fast. One minute you’re navigating the early stages of your career or buying your first home, and the next, you’re trying to figure out if you have enough saved to comfortably step away from your business or retire.

Choosing a financial advisor to guide you through these massive life transitions is one of the most critical decisions you will ever make. While it is easy to get caught up in the allure of investment performance and stock market returns, a truly valuable advisory relationship is about so much more than just managing a portfolio. Life doesn’t stand still and neither should your financial plan.

Over the years, you are going to experience career shifts, retirement, family milestones, changing tax laws, unexpected market volatility, and countless other events that can drastically impact your financial trajectory. Having an advisor who inherently understands your deepest goals and walks alongside you through every single stage of life is what makes all the difference.

At Thayer Financial, we firmly believe that financial planning isn’t a one-off transaction. It is a lifelong partnership built on a foundation of trust, radical transparency, and proactive guidance.

Why Being a “Fee-Only” Fiduciary Financial Advisor Matters

If you are currently evaluating financial advisors, one of the very first questions you should ask is: “How exactly do you get paid?” The answer to that simple question will tell you everything you need to know about how your recommendations are going to be made.

Thayer Financial is immensely proud to be a fully independent, fee-only financial advisors. But what does that actually mean in today’s evolving regulatory landscape?

For decades, much of the financial services industry operated under the “suitability standard.” This meant brokers and advisors could legally sell you financial products that were merely “suitable” for your situation, even if those products paid them a massive, hidden commission or weren’t necessarily the most cost-effective option available.

Recently, the regulatory environment underwent a significant shift. The SEC introduced Regulation Best Interest (Reg BI), effectively ending the old suitability standard for broker-dealers. Reg BI requires financial professionals to act in their clients’ best interest at the time a recommendation is made, without placing their own financial interests ahead of the client’s. They are now required to disclose, mitigate, and in some cases eliminate conflicts of interest.

While Reg BI is undoubtedly a massive step in the right direction for consumer protection, there is still a monumental difference between a broker operating under Reg BI and a true, fee-only advisor operating under the fiduciary standard of care operating under the Investment Adviser Act of 1940.

Many advisors today are what the industry calls “dual registrants”. They might offer comprehensive financial planning under a strict fiduciary standard, but they can still legally “switch hats” to a broker-dealer role under Reg BI when selling commission-based mutual funds, annuities, or insurance products.

As a strictly fee-only fiduciary Registered Investment Advisory (RIA) firm, we operate differently. Here is the Thayer Financial difference:

This distinction is crucial because it eliminates many of the conflicts of interest that still linger in much of the financial services industry. Every recommendation we make begins with a single, unwavering objective: helping you make financial decisions that support your long-term goals.

As your financial life grows more complex, our interests remain perfectly aligned with yours. You should always feel 100% confident that the advice you are receiving is strictly based on what’s best for your family and not on what generates a commission or satisfies a limited regulatory hurdle.

More Than an Advisor… Think of Us as Your Family Office

There is a common misconception that financial advisors simply pick stocks and manage investments. While investment management is certainly a core component of building wealth, it is only one piece of a much larger puzzle.

We often describe our role at Thayer Financial as serving as a family office for our clients.

Traditionally, a “family office” was an exclusive advisory structure utilized only by ultra-wealthy families to centralize all of their financial, legal, tax, and investment needs under one roof. The goal was to coordinate every moving part, so the entire estate ran smoothly and purposefully across multiple generations.

We believe you shouldn’t have to be a billionaire to benefit from that level of comprehensive, centralized care. By operating with that same family office philosophy, we help you understand how every single financial decision creates a ripple effect:

“None of these decisions happen in isolation. Trying to solve one financial problem without looking at the big picture often unintentionally creates another.”

By taking a holistic view of your complete financial life, we ensure that every gear in your financial machine is turning in the same direction. Whether you’re preparing to retire, navigating a complex business sale, structuring charitable gifts, or figuring out how to care for aging parents, our goal is to provide thoughtful, comprehensive guidance.

Financial Planning is a Team Sport

No single professional holds all the answers to every complex life event. That is why one of the greatest, and most overlooked, benefits of comprehensive financial planning is coordination.

You likely already have a team of professionals in your life:

The problem? In many cases, these professionals never speak to one another. They operate in silos. A change recommended by your attorney to protect your assets might completely derail the tax strategy you discussed with your CPA.

Our role is to step in and connect those pieces. Rather than allowing your experts to work independently, we actively collaborate with your existing team to ensure everyone is marching toward the exact same objectives. When your advisors communicate effectively, expensive mistakes are avoided, and brilliant planning opportunities are capitalized upon. We believe the absolute best outcomes happen when professionals work together, not separately.

Planning Doesn’t Stop on Your Retirement Date

A surprising number of people think financial planning ends the day they retire. They view retirement as the finish line. In reality, retirement marks the starting line of an entirely new, and often more complex, phase of planning.

When you retire, your financial focus undergoes a massive psychological and mathematical shift. You transition from accumulating wealth to distributing it (creating sustainable, lifelong income). The rules of the game completely change:

  1. Tax Strategies Evolve: How do you draw from a mix of pre-tax, Roth, and taxable accounts to minimize your lifetime tax bill?
  2. Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs): How will forced withdrawals from your retirement accounts impact your tax bracket?
  3. Healthcare & Medicare: How do you navigate the maze of Medicare enrollment and plan for potential long-term care costs?
  4. Legacy Planning: How do estate planning and charitable giving become larger priorities as you age?

Because these needs are a moving target, your financial plan needs to breathe and evolve with them. We don’t believe in creating a 50-page financial plan, putting it in a binder, and letting it collect dust on a shelf. We actively revisit your goals, review your progress, and pivot your strategy as life unfolds.

Transparency Builds Unshakeable Confidence

Money can feel incredibly complicated, and the financial industry is notorious for using intimidating jargon to keep it that way. Our goal at Thayer Financial is to do the exact opposite: we want to make your money understandable, approachable, and empowering.

The bedrock of every relationship we build is transparency. We want you to understand not only what we are recommending, but why we are recommending it. This means having open, honest, and sometimes tough conversations about fees, investment strategies, potential risks, and the overall planning process.

Financial planning should never feel like a black box. Instead, it should give you a profound sense of confidence. When you deeply understand the reasoning behind your financial strategy, you are infinitely better equipped to stay disciplined during periods of market uncertainty and avoid making emotional decisions based on short-term news headlines.

Proactive Communication: Fixing Problems Before They Start

One of the guiding questions we ask ourselves every day is brilliantly simple: “What can we do today to help our clients avoid a problem tomorrow?”

Being proactive is the cornerstone of our communication style. Sometimes that means picking up the phone to call you because Congress just passed a new tax law. Other times, it means running a stress test on your retirement income strategy five years before you actually retire. It might involve calling you to review your estate plan after the joyous birth of a new grandchild, or reaching out during a market correction to remind you why we built your portfolio the way we did.

Communication shouldn’t only happen when you have an annual meeting scheduled or when the stock market is plummeting. Regular, ongoing conversations guarantee that your financial plan stays perfectly aligned with your life.

Our clients know they never have to wait for an official “review” to pick up the phone. Whether you are weighing up a new job offer, looking to buy a vacation home, selling a business, or trying to help a child financially, we expect, and want, to be your first call.

Planning Across Generations

One of the most rewarding aspects of our work is building deep relationships that span multiple generations. It is an incredible honor when our clients introduce us to their adult children or grandchildren as they begin their own financial journeys.

These introductions are never just about managing a new investment account. They are about helping families create continuity and preserve their legacy.

It’s an unfortunate statistic that a vast majority of family wealth is lost by the second or third generation. As wealth transitions, younger family members immensely benefit from having a trusted advisor who already understands their family’s core values, goals, and long-term history.

We absolutely love sitting down with the next generation to educate them on responsible financial decision-making, the magic of compound interest, and the importance of thoughtful stewardship. Preparing your heirs to manage wealth responsibly is just as important as the hard work you put into building that wealth in the first place.

A Relationship Designed for the Long Term

At the end of the day, comprehensive financial planning isn’t about finding someone to help you make one good decision. It’s about finding a dedicated partner who will help you navigate thousands of decisions over the course of your lifetime.

At Thayer Financial, we refuse to measure our success solely by quarterly market performance. We measure our success by the peace of mind our clients feel. We measure it by how confident you are in your future, and how prepared you feel for whatever life throws your way next.

Our job is to listen intently, educate clearly, collaborate seamlessly, and provide objective, unbiased guidance through every single season of your life.

Whether you are in your peak earning years, rapidly approaching your retirement date, or carefully planning the legacy you will eventually leave behind, we are deeply committed to serving as your trusted partner every step of the way.

That is the Thayer Financial difference: A lifelong relationship built on objective advice, comprehensive planning, and an unwavering commitment to helping you achieve your dreams for today, tomorrow, and the generations that follow.
